After many weeks of training in fairly similar conditions the week of the regatta, of course was completely different! Windy, choppy and incredibly shifty Miami OCR didn’t quite work out for us as well as we planned.
After a good little practice regatta where we put in come great results and were really encouraged with our speed and improvements we had made in our training. The real regatta was pretty tough!
The first day with winds over 30knts and enormous squalls started as it meant to go on! we had two good races but in the second race we didn’t mange to get around the course after Tom and I got separated following a capsize!
The rest of the regatta we couldn’t quite manage to get any consistency in our results. We felt fast but often got stuck out on the wrong side of a few nasty shifts and in the big 50 boat fleet it was tough to make up the places.
Despite the disappointing end result we have taken away a huge amount of learning points and as our first regatta really racing we can see the huge improvement in our boat handling and massive gains in our light winds speed which was the aim for the Miami training block.
I am now off to Oman to skipper the Oman Sail Women’s team – Al Thurya in the 2015 SATT race!
